Asalamualkium. In this article we will go over short authentic duas that are easy to remember. We should try our best to makes these a habits in our daily life. These duas are based off the hadith and sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and references are given for each.
By the end of this article you will know which dua to recite when entering and leaving your home. We will also discuss good practices which Prophet Muhammad used to recommend to protect your home from the evils of shaitan.
DUA WHEN ENTERING HOME
In Sahih Muslim 2018 a In-book reference : Book 36, Hadith 136 it was recorded:
Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) as saying: When a person enters his house and mentions the name of Allah at the time of entering it and while eating the food, Satan says (addressing himself: You have no place to spend the night and no evening meal; but when he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, the Satan says: You have found a place to spend the night, and when he does not mention the name of Allah while eating food, he (the Satan) says: You have found a place to spend the night and evening meal.
There is another hadith commonly cited when entering home At-Tirmidhi but was given graded as Da’if (meaning weak) by Darussalam.
Narrated Anas:”The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to me: ‘O my little son! When you enter upon your family then give the Salam, it will be a blessing for you and upon the inhabitants of your house.”Grade : Da’if (Darussalam) Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2698 In-book reference : Book 42, Hadith 11
DUA WHEN LEAVING HOUSE
Transliteration: bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‛alal-laah, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah
Here’s the actual hadith from Sunan Abi Dawud #5095:
The Prophet (SAWS) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah,” the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?
This dhikr should be a practice we should do daily.
OTHER DUAS AND PRACTICES TO PROTECT NEW HOME
It’s important to continue showing gratitude towards Allah. We should be grateful to the fact he has given us a home and shelter. Recognize things could be a lot worse and show you are thankful. In Surah Ibrahim verse 7 Allah says,
Wa-ith taaththana rabbukumla-in shakartum laazeedannakum wala-in kafartum inna AAathabeelashadeed
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.”
This next hadith teaches Muslims to be kind to their neighbors and to generously honor the guests that visit. The hadith also mentions the importance of holding your tongue if you do not have anything good to say.
The Prophet (saws) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest generously. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should speak what is good or keep silent.” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6136 In-book reference : Book 78, Hadith 163
You can also follow another sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessing be upon him, which is to recite Surah Al Baqarah in your home.
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) as saying: Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqaran is recited. Reference : Sahih Muslim 780 In-book reference : Book 6, Hadith 252
It would be best to actually read aloud this Surah but now with technology we can also play this Surah on Youtube in the background while we clean, cook, or are occupied in some other way.
