ASSALAMUALAIKUM YA AHLAL QUBOOR

In one hadith narration it was mentioned that visiting the graves was forbidden. But the Prophet later changed his mind allowing people to visit the cemetery.
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “(In the past) I forbade you from visiting graves, but visit them now.” In another narration Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever wants to visit a graveyard, let him do so, because it reminds us of the Hereafter.”
The Prophet realized that death can actually make our lives better and allow us to become more productive.
How you may ask?
If we habitually visit the graveyard to remember loved ones we also face the unintentional consequence of orienting ourselves to what’s truly important in this world.
When we visit the cemetery we finally get disconnected from our day to day reality and are no longer bogged down by trivial matters. We are able to see the bigger picture and can become more forgiving of our little fights with family and friends.
We come to the realization that our time on earth is short, what’s really important is the time we have spent pleasing our creator.
The main objective of this life is to work achieve Jannah for ourselves and then to help our loved ones who’s opportunity has passed.
The assalamualaikum ya ahlal quboor dua is one way we can make a difference. Reciting this dua asks Allah for peace upon their graves and asks for Allah’s forgivnesss for them.
Let’s learn this full dua with it’s meaning.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM YA AHLAL QUBOOR DUA FOR GRAVE

This dua comes from At-Tirmidhi and Bulugh al-Maram. In arabic text it’s written,
Assalamualaikum yaa ahlal quboor. Yaghfirullahu lanaa wa lakum wa antum salafunaa wa nahnu bil ithar.

MEANING OF DUA FOR VISITING GRAVE:

Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these graves. May Allah forgive you and us. You have preceded us, and we are following your trail.
This was related by At-Tirmidhi who graded this hadith as Hasan.

ASSALAMU ALAIKUM AHLAD DIYAR DUA FOR GRAVEYARD

There is another duas besides the as salaam alaikum ahlal kubur which you could recite. This dua was mentioned in Sahih Muslim.

Transliteration
: Assalamu alaikum ahlad diyar, minal-mu’mineena walmuslimeena, wa ‘innaa ‘in shaa’ Allaahu bikum laahiqoona as’alullaaha lanaa wa lakumul- ‘aafiyata.
Translation: Oh Muslims residing here, salaams on you, by the will of Allah we will also be coming to you. We seek safety for us and you.
These are two duas which are easy to learn and memorize and can be said to bring peace to our loved one’s in the grave.
What’s beautiful of these specific duas is they go beyond asking Allah for forgiveness of just one individual but asks for forgiveness and safety of all Muslims who may reside in that graveyard.
Oh Allah make us among your righteous servants and guide us all to the right path. Ameen.
